Navigating You Through the Progressive Underground

Hello there. For those who don’t know, we are a small organization of prog metal fans who love digging into the underground for the hidden gems that would otherwise be lost in the cascades of history. By digging up small albums, we give them a chance to see the sunlight and to be noticed by fans who might like them. We give small bands an opportunity to get their momentum moving so that they can grow and maybe one day reach the mainstream.

However, this is no small task for us writers as we spend a significant amount of time searching through the trenches of Metal Archives, Bandcamp, Rate Your Music, etc., for quality up-and-comers. As many of us have gotten older and retired, our staff has been shrinking over the years. This is why it is time to cycle in some new wide-eyed reviewers who are interested in joining our cause. We are looking for people who spend time researching prog metal and prog metal adjacent genres (prog-rock, avant-garde metal, tech death, post-metal, mathcore, etc.) and who are willing to write one review every one or two weeks as well excerpts in our monthly Featured Posts. I want to emphasize,

We especially need those who are knowledgeable in prog power metal, traditional prog metal with clean vocals, prog rock, sludge, and post-metal. (Also anybody that knows stuff about WordPress / Web Design would go a long way)

The pros of joining our website:

  • Your reviews will be viewed by thousands of eyes, and you will be reaching out to the ears of hungry prog fans throughout the globe.
  • You will be accompanied by a group of experienced prog metal fans and excellent reviewers who aid in your growth as a public writer.
  • You will be spending a lot of time discovering new bands and practicing your artistic judgment.
  • We have access to lots of album promos, so you will have an exclusive opportunity to hear albums before they are released.

As far as the requirements go, we expect you to have competent English writing abilities and to be able to flesh out your musical thoughts on paper. You will need to take away about 4-6 hours or so from each week to listen to the album of your choice, draft, and finalize your review. We are privileged to have a great editing/feedback team that will aid in your writing so do not be afraid of doing these all on your own. We are generally very flexible with what you can write about. As long as it’s progressive in some form, we’re OK with it. The main caveat is that we primarily write about recent albums, but you will also have the freedom to do feature posts like Lost in Time, conduct interviews, add to our themed playlists, and do scene guides. We have writers that span across the globe and we welcome applicants from any country as long as you meet our requirements.

If you apply, make sure you state the following:

  • the genres you prefer (e.g. progressive death metal, prog power, traditional prog metal, post-metal, mathcore, avant-garde, djent, prog rock, metalcore, etc.) and a list of your favorite bands (or a link to your last.fm/Spotify/rym profile if it’s representative enough)
  • A realistic amount of free time you have per week
  • Your writing experience (if any)
  • if there’s any specific prog scene you’re very deep into

Please send your applications to theprogressivesubway@gmail.com. We hope to hear from you and are excited to see what the future holds!
