Navigating You Through the Progressive Underground

Hello there. You might have noticed things have been slow in the past few months in terms of our review output. We’ve tried a bunch of things to get more reviews out, but at the end of the day, a lot of our writing staff is just busy with other things in life, so we came to the conclusion that we need new writers. This blog has come a long way since its inception of posting small notes on bands to Reddit, and we feel that we are ready to try and reach a bigger audience. But for that, we need more people, and this is where you come into play. We’re looking for a few new writers.

So if you are someone who likes writing about music, and has a love for all things prog, you’re already halfway there. More specifically, we’re looking for someone who:

  • likes to dig through the mud of new releases to find gold;
  • (preferably) has some writing experience;
  • has the time to write one review per week.

Additionally, if there’s any specific scene related to prog you’re knowledgeable about, or if you know a lot of great older (10+ years) obscure albums we would greatly appreciate it, but those are not required. We get some promos, but most of what we review we find ourselves, so prepare to do some digging.

We are generally very flexible with what you can write about. As long as it’s progressive in some form, we’re OK with it. Your main gig will be writing about recent albums, but you will also have the freedom to do feature posts like Lost in Time, scene guides, band spotlights, or conducting interviews. The basis of what we cover is progressive metal, but we also like doing related experimental genres like prog rock, post-metal, avant-garde, mathcore, etc. if there’s anything worthwhile coming out (this also extends to feature posts).

If you apply, make sure you state the following:

  • the genres you prefer (e.g. classic prog metal, post-metal, mathcore, avant-garde, heavy prog, etc.) and a list of your favorite bands (or a link to your last.fm/Spotify profile if it’s representative enough)
  • how much time you have per week
  • whether you like to dig for new music
  • your writing experience (if any)
  • if there’s any specific prog scene you’re very deep into

You can send your application to theprogressivesubway@gmail.com. We hope to hear from you!
