Navigating You Through the Progressive Underground

Hello, prog heads! As we enter another new year, the time has come again to put out the call for new writers. We are recruiting, and we have some big plans for the blog in 2025 that you could be part of! Do you love underground prog and want to communicate your passion? Do you love writing? Did AMG reject you for being simply too goshdarn handsome? If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions then we want to hear from you!

What we can offer is:

  • Access to albums before they officially release.
  • Opportunities to improve your writing.
  • An extracurricular activity that looks good on a CV.
  • An opportunity to talk about the music you love to a larger audience.
  • Absolutely no monetary compensation—this is a hobby for all of us because we love it.
  • A fun little Discord community to talk about music, writing, and whatever the hell else (we all just roast each other’s music taste most of the time).
  • Andy will send you at least fifty recs each month – you’ll like some of them.

Our expectations of reviewers is that:

  • You write at least two reviews per month (we have part time and full time options, and we’re reasonably nice if life is just getting on top of you, it happens to us all!).
  • You don’t just review albums you like. We all indulge in our favourites from time to time, but overall we try to be a constructively critical blog, and that includes writing negative or middling reviews.
  • That you’re a massive prog nerd who will chat rubbish with us on our private little Discord.

If that sounds good and you want to apply, we have a two-step hiring process. To enter, please send us an email at theprogressivesubway@gmail.com with the following details:

  • Your writing experience.
  • How much time you’re able to put towards this (i.e. would you be a part-time or a full-time writer).
  • A general overview of your taste, both in terms of genre preferences and in terms of favorite bands. This can be a last.fm or rateyourmusic profile, Spotify/Itunes statistics, or just a manually compiled list. We try to make our prog coverage as comprehensive as possible.
  • Please mention if you happen to have any relevant experience, for example with website management, graphic design, etc.
  • Please put REVIEWER APPLICATION in all caps in your email subject so that we don’t miss your application amidst the sea of promo emails we get.

After your initial application, we will send you a list of albums to choose from based on your taste for a test review and disclose the criteria it must meet. If your writing is up to standards, we will send you an invite to our Discord server and inaugurate you into the team!
